A Night On Ponce IPA with glass

A Night On Ponce IPA (7.5% ABV)

Three Taverns Brewery (Decatur, Georgia)

I turned 25 last Sunday, and thankfully my family knows me well and gifted me with some amazing beers to celebrate. This beer, out of Decatur, was a gift from my brother and sister-in-law. I've had Three Taverns before, but I'd never seen this particular IPA.

This tasty IPA pours a nice amber color with very little head. The nose is sweet and malty, hitting you as soon as the beer pours into the glass.

On first sip, you'll get that sweet, caramel taste of the malt coming through with a slight bite from the hops. The mouthfeel is smooth, and the beer finishes dry. You'll also get notes of citrus — a lot of orange, though I've seen other reviewers note hints of lemon and grapefruit — coming through in the beer.

One thing I'm impressed with is that even though this beer is 7.5%, it doesn't smack you in the face with that ABV. The alcohol flies under the radar, with the flavor of the beer coming forward instead. This beer reminds me a lot of Terrapin's Hi-5 IPA, which was one of the first IPAs I had that had more sweetness than piney bitterness come through.

I wouldn't say this is a first grab for a summer beer, since I tend to steer away from malty concoctions when it is 100 degrees out, but I can see this beer standing up in any season as long as you've got a good A/C unit. If someone had this in their fridge, I'd definitely grab one, but I'd probably restock my own fridge with some never-before-enjoyed beers before circling back to this one.

Overall rating: 3.75/5
