Lord Grey - 5% ABV

Three Taverns Craft Brewery (Decatur, Georgia)

Earl Grey Sour Ale

Come for the can art, stay for the blend of tartness, lavender and bergamot.

This beer pours a nice golden, slightly hazy color with very little head. It's pretty carbonated, though, with bubbles rising throughout.

The nose is citrusy and bright, and so is the first sip. On a small sip, the tartness and sour bite can almost overwhelm, but just as you finish that sip, you're hit with the floral, dry bitterness of Earl Grey tea.

It's a surprisingly deep flavor, and the tea taste will weigh heavily on your palette. It's a dry finish, just like what you'd get with a darker brewed tea.

On a larger sip, however, the tea flavor fills your mouth, and then the flavors almost water down as you swallow. Then, the citrus sweeps in. You're left with a lemony tartness on your tongue, and it all wraps up into a nice, sour ale package.

I honestly bought this beer just for the can art, and for trying something new. I knew it was going to be an Earl Grey beer, but I didn't really know what to expect.

The beer surprised me just because the tea flavors were so strong, yet the citrus and the tartness balanced out the florals. That being said, if you don't like tea, don't pick this up up. The citrus cuts through and ensures you're not just drinking carbonated, cold Earl Grey tea, but the bergamot and lavender is unmistakeable. If you are a tea drinker, however, pick this one up. It toes the line between summer and winter, sour and bitter. It's super crushable, refreshing, and just a really solid beer.
